Exploring Energy: Stage 3 Science Adventures

Stage 3 Science

We are thrilled to share insights into the wonderful lessons created by Stage 3 teachers at JPS as students embark on an exhilarating journey into the realm of kinetic energy – the energy of movement. From constructing catapults to creating DIY musical instruments and crafting balloon aeroplanes, they delved deep into the captivating world of energy in motion.

One of the highlights of Week 2 was the catapult experiment, where students built their own catapults to fling pom poms into the air, aiming to land them in designated targets. This hands-on activity not only sparked their curiosity but also reinforced the concept of kinetic energy in action.

Another engaging experiment involved the creation of musical instruments using tin cans and rubber bands. By exploring the vibrations of these objects, students gained insight into how sound energy is generated through movement, adding a musical twist to their scientific exploration.

The week concluded with a demonstration of mechanical energy as students constructed balloon aeroplanes powered solely by lung force. Witnessing their creations glide across a string was not only fascinating but also underscored the concept of energy transfer in a tangible way.

As Week 3 unfolded, students continued their exploration of energy, this time focusing on electrical and chemical energy. They constructed electrical circuits using batteries and aluminum foil, witnessing the transformation of potential energy into light energy as a light bulb illuminated. Additionally, they explored the chemical energy produced by the reaction between bicarbonate soda and vinegar, using it to inflate balloons.

Observing the gravitational energy of marbles rolling down a ramp provided yet another captivating insight into the various forms of energy at play in our everyday lives. Through these experiments, students gained a deeper understanding of how potential energy can be converted into kinetic energy, enriching their scientific knowledge and fostering a sense of wonder about the world around them.

The excitement and enthusiasm displayed by Stage 3 students throughout these experiments underscore the value of hands-on learning experiences in igniting their curiosity and fostering a lifelong love for science. As they continue their journey of exploration, we look forward to witnessing their continued growth and discovery in the captivating realm of energy.
